10 Reasons to get a Wii over a PS3 this Holiday Season

Posted by: dvbrevolution in 1. Wii News & Articles

Well the Holiday Season is fast approaching and two of the hottest video game consoles are about to be released next weekend. As many of you know, topics like this are bound to happen on either side so let’s take a look as to why you should get a Wii over a PS3 this Holiday Season.

VS.

1. More Third-Party Exclusives: Red Steel, Rayman Raving Rabbids (timed exclusive), Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, GT Pro Series, Elebits, Metal Slug Anthology (Next-Gen exclusive), Dragon Ball Z: BT2 (Next-Gen exclusive) and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz. This is compared to about four PS3 third-party exclusives.

2. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess on launch day: While some may complain that it’s just a “Gamecube” game, fans of the Playstation brand simply cannot wait for a PS2 game like “God of War 2″, which would be taken any day over the PS3’s holiday line-up. Those who recently got hands-on with Zelda are calling it one of the best Zelda titles ever made; better than the legendary Ocarina of Time, which is highly regarded as the greatest game of all time. With over 70 hours of game play and with a massive world to explore, it makes this game the greatest launch title ever.

3. Wii will have 62 games ready for 2006: While 30 of them may be downloadable classics, the PS3 will only have 23 games in total for the holiday season.

4. Wii has a variety of games available for 2006 for practically everyone: If you want racing for example, there are three games for the PS3 while Wii has Need for Speed Carbon, Excite Truck, GT Pro, Monster 4×4 and Cars; in addition to Victory Run and F-Zero for the Virtual Console. PS3 has mostly hardcore titles for 2006.

5. If you love old-school: The Wii will have 30 classics from Zelda, F-Zero, Mario 64, Sonic, Gunstar Heroes, Bomberman, Bonk’s Adventure and more. PS3 is expected to have two downloadable titles.

6. Price and Supply: The Wii priced at $250 is a great deal and those who find the PS3 price ($500-600) to be too costly, should get a Wii to experience a new way to play games first-hand. They can later decide to purchase a PS3 when the price has gone down. This way they don’t miss out on gaming this holiday season! Wii will have 1 million Wii’s available during launch in North America compared to 400,000 PS3’s. There will be plenty of supplies for the Wii during the holiday season, while PS3’s will not be able to meet demand.

7. Same games with Prettier Graphics on PS3: There is another Madden, three NBA games, Tiger Woods, Genji etc. While some of the games will utilize Sixaxis technology, it’s simply more of the same with prettier graphics for the holiday season.

8. The Perfect Video Game Gift: With the Wii at $250, it’s the most affordable gift to give your friends and family for the holiday season. The bundle also includes Wii Sports and the downloadable Opera Web Browser. Currently, 38% of Women play console games. The Wii offers ease of use and a sleek design with games that will appeal to Women; whether its Trauma Center or even Wii Sports. What other way to have your girlfriend involved in gaming?

9. Small, Quiet, more Portable, Power Efficient and Fast Loading Times: The Wii is the size of three DVD cases stacked on top of each other, making it the smallest “mega-console” ever. Although it’ll have fans built-in, it is designed to be very quiet. You can place the console horizontally or vertically and because of its size, it offers better portability than any other console to date. The console is also 20% more power efficient than Gamecube and has the ability to stay active while the console is turned off by using only the power of a miniature light-bulb. The Wii will offer blazing fast load times and if the console is turned on while a game disc is still in the system, the game will run almost instantly. Between many areas in game, it may even take just three seconds to load.

10. Revolutionary Control Scheme: Sure High-definition games look fantastic, but no other system will offer such a gaming experience; even if the PS3 has Sixaxis technology. Swing the controller as a baseball bat, wield it as a lightsaber, use it as a pointer for more accurate shooting, jerk the controller to kick a ball, scroll over characters and position them in a real-time strategy game, steer it in a racing game, use it as a bow and arrow with the nunchuk and more! While it may have rumble, you can also customize the controller with attachments like a steering wheel or a golf club. Every Wii title in 2006 will utilize such technology.

Great post man, great post. I just have one question though, did you include the playstation games you will be able to download on the PS3 at launch for the total amount of PS3 games coming out this year?

He said there is only 2 downloadable games at launch so i guess it really doesn’t make to much of a difference. I can’t believe you but the wiimote and 10!

    @Adroit One

There are two downloadable games for PS3 coming out this year, but as for PS1 and PS2 game downloads, I haven’t seen or heard anything about a launch list or whether even those games will make it for the rest of the year.

    @luigi193

Left the best for last :)

The wii is way over hyped.Yes the controler for the Wii is inovative and its only strong side, its price is good? Not really considering the CPU is what 10 years old more or less and all thoughs 62 games out in 2006 are just games that were already in development for the game cube. The wii would be amazing for around 99 bucks but for 249 its just overpriced very old tech rehashed and hyped for nintendo fans.Come on 80 megs of ram my pentium 1 had a 128 gigs of ram in 1995.This system is over priced hype.I will admit the controler is intresting and will have people dropping cash on the table to buy the system so I do believe it will do well.As fpr old school games I have them all on my PC already Im not even about to spend 5 bucks for 1988s excite bike trust me the nastalgia of old games runs out fast. And the reason it loads fast is the graphics are 5 years ago on a modern disk drive ofcourse they load fast.

The wii does look cool as its something new and its cheap, but over time I think the ps3 would do better due to it’s power and good intense games.

    @Maria

I believe you may need to understand PC hardware and Gaming hardware are different. Take the Xbox for example, it has 733Mhz and 64MB but it can play a game like Half-Life 2. Why this is, is because game consoles are built for practically one thing, gaming. PC’s are built for multi-purposes in mind not to mention Windows OS is also a factor as well.

Reason it loads fast is not because of the graphics, rather it has a lot to do with the drive and the firmware they have developed to make it quick.

I disagree that nostlagia for old games run out fast, otherwise you probably wouldn’t have them on the PC in the first place :)

Hmm. Wii rocks. But i was wondering, how easily can you break it? and, yeah, wtf? 128 gigs? Sure.

  10. cogsprocket says:

    November 6th, 2006 at 11:19 pm

Maria, take everything you’ve just said and put another console name in place of Wii. Not ALL of what you said will really be accurate in describing the other systems, but you’ll be amazed at how much IS.

Consider your argument for a moment, however. While you claim the $249 price is high for “old tech” you really don’t explain how that is. Consider, for instance, the price of the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360, both of which can easily be considered overpriced. While many will contend, for instance, that the PlayStation 3 is a bargain Blu-Ray player, I can’t imagine what person is going to stand in line for a Blu-Ray player. It’s a novelty at best and I really can’t see how it makes the PlayStation 3 a bargain by default. It’s an overpriced piece of hardware from whatever angle you look at it. The price point of the PlayStation 3 is $600, twice that of the launch price of it’s predecessor, much higher than consoles are traditionally priced in the consumer market. Before someone comes back to me with the $500 model I have to say, straightaway, that the $500 model, much like the $300 model of the Xbox 360 is a marketing ploy to make the higher priced model seem like more of a bargain. Take all the variables and put them together and you have a marketing package that has little chance of failing.

And it worked! Prior to the announcement of Blu-Ray in the PlayStation 3 who can HONESTLY say they were considering purchasing a Blu-Ray player? I can’t. I can’t say I was really considering purchasing a next-gen video device within the near future at all, let alone picking a champion format. Of course, I’m sure at this point in the post you’ve probably stopped reading because I’m clearly a Nintendo bigot as I prepare to purchase Gears of War tomorrow by ending a string of 360 gaming with my co-workers, my wife in the next room just shutting down the PlayStation 2 that our played Curious George to lull our daughter to sleep. Soon she will plug her earphones into her PSP to listen to a little music and I will plug my Vaio in to recharge overnight in preparation for a day of meetings tomorrow. What’s my point, you ask? I’ve no brand loyalty but I’m getting a bit tired of the crap getting thrown around about what’s worth the money. Anybody can justify the price of anything.

And as far as out-dated tech goes… I really think you ought to do some research on the best selling console ever. You’d be surprised at how long the most low-tech of consoles really sold, how well nostalgia sells and how long load-times for original PlayStation games were even when they were played on the PlayStation 2 with the speed increase set explicitly.

“Come on 80 megs of ram my pentium 1 had a 128 gigs of ram in 1995.”

Wow, somebody pointed this out while I was typing… Just… Wow… I mean you could cut the irony with a knife…

Here, let me make it even clearer with some more RAM stats…

Requirements for Windows 2000 to run stable : 128MB
    Wii: 128MB
    PlayStation 3: 256MB
    Xbox 360: 512MB

My laptop has 1.5 Gigs, my desktop has 2 Gigs. By your logic the Wii, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 are all horrible purchases because Moore’s law has already made them obsolete by a half a decade. If you had 128MB in 1995 with a Pentium you were probably getting horrible performance out of your system. I’d really like to know what you needed that ram for in 1995 because at that time 128MB was pretty unheard of.

  12. cogsprocket says:

    November 6th, 2006 at 11:41 pm

Correction on that, I mis-typed the spec for the Wii.

    @cogsprocket

The tastes of this site’s audience are obvious, but here is another POV: The PS3 uses cell technology. This may end up being greatly superior to the competitors or inferior to them, but it is definitely new tech. Wii uses an (as described by Nintendo) overclocked Gamecube processor. PS3 has built-in HDMI outs and is capable of displaying higher resolutions than Wii. PS3 also has Blu-Ray as you mentioned. A stand-alone Blu-Ray player is around $800 (last time I checked a price at least). You write this feature off as novelty. FYI calling something “novelty” does not make it so. If Blu-Ray becomes the new movie standard then that is a plus. If not the format can hold much more data than a Wii disc, making it useful in gaming applications. As we are just starting to see Blu-Ray players and most HD Tv’s do not support the 1080p resolution of some PS3 games, I think it is safe to say that a lot of the PS3 is new tech. Do I care? Not really, but if you are going to claim to be objective… BE OBJECTIVE!

I only wanted to clarify Maria’s “old tech” point, and point out you are wrong in applying this to the PS3. I am not a graphics/tech whore. I own a PS2 and the only games I am even mildy interested in, for the time being, fall into this “old tech” class of consoles (LoZelda: TP, Rogue Galaxy, God of War 2).

The nintendo wii is awesome! I will certainly be buying one… The controls look sweet plus I am a nintendo fan already…

I still cannot imagine spending 600 dollars for a video game system. I suppose it plays blu rays but I dont really give a care… Id rather have innovation and better games than blu ray…

Most people that I know dont even have a 1080p television… I only have one and its my parents… lol

IF EVER Wii can claims 25% of the console gaming market, it’ll be the best christmas present ever.

    Wii (out-dated RAM) = 25%
    PS3 + Xbox360 (Top of the techno) = 75% or (37.5% each avg).

It’ll only serve to prove that in order to make the best gaming experiences, technology and pretty graphics is only the icing on the cake.

Yay for fanboyism. I will probably buy the wii, then buy a PS3 a few years later along with a nice Dell 24″ monitor to take advantage of the 1080i.

Right now, I don’t see any reason to buy a 360, save for the few “killer apps” like Gears of War and Halo 3. Right now the PSWii offers more to me.

Don’t you guys think you’re comparing apples to oranges though? Yes they both play video games and are intended as video games system, but the PS3 is so much more, it’s a full entertainment system. I’m not dissing Wii and I think it’s going to be killer, I just know if it’s necessarily fair to compare things like price when what you’re getting is very different. I could be a tool and throw in something like “Blu-Ray” but we all know the specs and what comes with what. So I don’t know if calling the PS3 or 360 over-priced is being fair. They both are more then video game systems, so just look at what you’re paying for.

    Wii: 128MB
    PS3: 256MB XDR, 256mb GDDR3 (in other words, 512MB you sony hater!)
    Xbox360: 512mb GDDR3

    @Matthew

This was for the Holiday Season in general. It is hard to compare in many ways as all three systems are unique in there own way. PS3 has the technology and the best media player around (even supports Divx), 360 has the best online system while the Wii has the best gameplay experience.

Most cases it comes down to the games. It’s the software that makes the console.

I believe price can be an issue when it comes to a games console. The PS3 is a very expensive system as a games console but as to what it can do, things like Yellow Dog Linux support to Blu-Ray it is an affordable system. But most consumers may not see it that way.

It’s 91 MB total from what is known for the Wii, although I’m sure the extra 16MB that was in the Gamecube will probably be in the Wii (for backwards compatibility etc). It uses 1T-SRAM and we don’t know the bus speed. Gamecube had 2.6GB/s.

Nintendo is the king of reviews.I loved the coments you all said.Im Russian/American and it takes me time to think my words into american wich is not the same as english.I spent most of my life in the states and grew up playing games with my father and my mother at time, we love video games in this house so please know I want not to trash nintendo.I must eat a late dinner but forgive my mistakes and thank you for the intelligent comments.I would like to say more and hear more from all of you soon.

    On the PS3 ….

It’s going to have the ability to run Linux, so asusming they don’t cripple it (and that’s a BIG assumption .. we’ll have to wait and see), then you will have the ability to do the following out of the box:

    - HDMI output at 1080p
    - A blu ray player. No, I wouldn’t have considered one seperately, but it IS part of the package. And if you have a Netflix account, this really gets interesting, as you can rent blu ray movies from there. Righ tnow, my HDTV has an HDMI port that’s not even being used.
    - The ability to play just about any console game for free, up to and including the PS1. There’ll also be PS2 support, and probably some degree of Dreamcast compatability
    - Pretty much any arcade game up to the mid-to-late 90’s. Anybody wanna play Killer Instinct in HD?
    - Support for just about any video codec you can throw at it
    - If we’re lucky, we might even get some DVR capability out of it
    - Plus the ability to play PS3 games. This isn’t worth much, IMHO, as these will pretty much be the same games we’ve been playing for the past 10 years, only with better graphics.

Now, ask yourself … is this worth $600?

As for the Wii, does anybody else want to play Zelda and Metroid yet AGAIN? I don’t. Though I’m reserving final judgement until I actually get my hands on one, that better be one kick a$$ controller to make me want to play Gamecube games all over again.

It does no good to compair memory in a computer vs a console. If your saying windows 2000 needs 128mb to even run and so a console with 128 would suck, a fresh install of windows 2000 will use about 80-90mb of the memory for it’s self, drivers, services, etc…. I would think the o/s of a console would use very little memory, leaving well over 100mb out of 128 free for the game.

If your talking about old computers, my friend ran his win95 computer on 8mb of ram, I had a whoping 28.

Sure the ps3 has better specs and would be a beter system based on cpu and grafix speed and quality, will it be worth more than double the price? For a 8 or 12 year old most likey not, for my girlfriend would would like to play the reto nintendo games and dosent know what 1080i or p is, most likely not. If you want to play games for cheap, the nintendo will do the trick.

  25. Microtosh says:

    November 7th, 2006 at 9:43 am

Picking a console based on specs is pretty stupid (well the PS3 and xbox360 also function as next-gen media players). The Wii might not be compatible with your 17 foot polymorphic WHUXGA TV with built in cup holders, but hell, it plays Zelda, Mario, Red Steel, and etc. .

What I’m saying is, if Zeldas your cup of tea(gin) then get a Wii, If you think Halo is the shit(everyone does, even the perfunctory Microsoft haters) get an xbox360, and if you love(d) Gods of War(not much of a sony guy, but this game kicked ass) then get your BLeU-Ray playing space-heater of doom(aka th mutha F(_)kin PS3)

As for me, I couldn’t fathom feeling safe without a brand new krisp copy of Zelda(and Mario) in my hands. Put aside your racist console thoughts for a moment, if these two splendiphorous games were under Microsoft or Sony I would go for there console.

I care MUCH more about the games then if the console can be added to my collection of not so used built in DVD(BLeU-Ray,HD-DVD) functionality but require dongle attachment player, or if it can cook my breakfast with afternoon massage(of what I hear the xbox360 can cook up a nasty batch of eggs). If your getting the PS3/xbox360 not because of the games, but just to make your self feel better than everyone else because you have a small penis thing, then whatever.

But keep in mind, with my purchase of the Wii, not only do I get to play Zelda(and Mario), I also have a reasonable explanation for wacking a friend, or family member(take your pick) in the face.

Hitting people is wrong, but so funny

I have to agree with Maria that the Wii if over-hyped. There is a lot of misconception of what to expect from the remote. When you move the controller in a direction, it pretty much corresponds to pressing a control pad in the same direction. People are thinking that they are going to be swinging the remote like a bat, a sword,a fishing pole, etc…but the unfortunate fact of the matter is that it doesn’t work that way. You are better off flicking your wrist. Nintendo has done an excellent job of hiding this fact from people, but the remote will not simulate real world motion. This problem was already been expressed on several other review site. Personally, I believe that the Wii is going to be a novalty item. Again, Nintendo has done an amazing job of showing people have loads of fun jumping up and down to play games, but really, how often are you really going to be willing to do that? The following website has a review of the control scheme of the Wii if anyone is interested.

    http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2006/10/26/Nintendo_Wii_Hands_On/1.html

My 2 cents worth on PS3 and Xbox 360 is this.

Sony is taking a hugh gamble on the PS3. They have A LOT invested in this item and if it succeeds, they stand to make a killing. Keep in mind that this battle is not only about next gen consoles. For MS and Sony, its a battle for the next meida format too. Sony stands to make more money off of Blu-Ray if it is the new format (probably more money off of Blu-Ray format alone then the actual PS3), but the new format is pricey and filled with a lot of risk. They had several missteps over the past year, and they will be playing catch up. One of their biggest selling point of 1080p for games has already been axed for Resistance: Fall of Man; just because you can doesn’t mean that you will. So how many games will really be produced in 1080p?

As for the Xbox, with a year long head start, you would have thought that they have a bigger market share, unfortunately for MS, they have not done as well as most people would have thought they would have done. The biggest problems lies in 3rd party support. Will they have the 3rd party support that Sony had in the last gen?

Whats the point of blueray discs allowing developers to store 50 gigs worth of hi-res textures when the system is bottlenecked by only 256MB of ram, compared to the Xbox 360 which has 512MB?

Technically the Xbox 360 can display more textures and at a higher res than the PS3, having all that extra textures on the disc is useless if you can only load half the amount the 360 can at any given moment.

    Think about it.

    (In regards to Matthew’s response:)

Yes, comparing the PS3 and 360 to the Wii is like comparing apples to oranges, except the PS3 isn’t the orange. The Wii is. Nintendo developed the Wii with one thing in mind: a new experience. They never intended on amazing, high-end graphics. Nor did they intend to make a media center. If they had intended to keep up with the next-gen consoles, they probably would have included a DVD player. Nintendo’s logic is simple. Gaming consoles are meant for gaming. It’s the year 2006, and DVD players are already massively common in peoples’ homes. When is the last time you’ve gone to a movie rental store and asked for a VHS? If people already own (numerous) DVD players, why include a DVD player in the Wii and have to raise the price? I want to have fun gaming, even if that means less beautiful game play. I would much rather sit down and play Super Smash Brothers or Twilight Princess, enjoying every minute at the controls, then sit down to play Ridge Racer 7 and have the same gaming experience I’ve always had–except with better graphics. A year from now, PS3’s graphics will be outdated as the cycle always goes, and PC graphics will still be the leader. I am a bit Wii-biased, I’ll admit, but Nintendo isn’t focused on beauty; they’re focused on enjoyment.

  29. Brad says:

I keep hearing over and over how powerful and “next gen” the PS3 is going to be. Trust me when I say this…

Good graphics and next gen parts/technology does NOT make a good game. GAMEPLAY does. I won’t dispute that those things can help the gameplay, but the gameplay has to come first. How do you make game play better? To engage the user more…this is what the Wiimote is going to do.

I am sick and tired of playing the same old FPS over and over again…all it is, is a fricken button mashing contest…hopefully the Wiimote will showcase how much better people can actually play a game rather than how fast they can hit a button.

This comes from somebody who has not only been playing games for over 32 years, but I also teach how to make video games.

I’ve been playing video games for about 20 years now, and it seems that with the extra processing power comes the ability to not only improve graphics, but to also change level design and manipulate gameplay within the game itself. New gameplay does not need to be strictly external as the Wii remote. I enjoy Sony because as a console they have been able to produce quality games for the widest range of gamers - I can play Mad Maestro and then switch to GTA in a heartbeat. Not a Sony fanboy, I sincerely want all consoles to succeed, but we should probably wait and play them all until we start forming an opinion on them.

As for me, Wii is my reborn for video gaming. The PS3 has nothing for me no games and no new experiences. Graphics have always been upgraded and there were no new interface on the gameplay. All PS3 games could have been made on PS2 with the same experience. While all Wii games could have been on GameCube with a different experience. GTA and Gran Turismo are boring for me.

    “”"”@ monstermatt
you said: : 1) Grand Theft Auto. 2) Gran Turismo.

    ’nuff said.”"”

I have to disagree for getting the PS3 for those 2 games, firstly for GTA I am assuming you are talking about GTA4, the game is also coming out on the Xbox 360, to which I already have,

As For Gran Turismo I played a GT for a few minutes, then I decided I’ve had enough,
I don’t like GT mainly because of the fact that it’s BORING, also because there are so many racing simulators these days, and GT HD is something I do not want for many reasons:
    1) At E3 the presentaion of GT HD was just boring and took too long, It looked like all they were showing was the same game with better graphics,
    2) This next game where you have to pay money online to get started is something where I simply said NO WAY

There is only one reason why you would need a BR Player or HD-DVD player: If you were a techno freak with a HD TV, which I am not, I mean to get the $600 experience from the PS3 you need to first spend at least $5000 on the TV alone,

The other reason I don’t want the PS3 is the Lackluster line up of games, I am seriously over FPS’s, there’s just so many of them now most are just same old same old, also MGS4 seems to be their major selling point but I’ve never played MGS before so I don’t know If I would want this game

    Here is a console joke:

The xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and a PS3 walk down a hall on an epic journey to become the leaders of the console generation. Eventually they meet up with with the legendary King of Games. The king speaks to each console and says this: In order to pass you must prove your readiness and ability to capture market share to me. Then the king speaks again this time to the xbox 360 you have proven yourself you may pass. Then he turns and speaks to the PS3 and the Wii and says you two have not yet proven your selfs and must fight to the death. The Wii immediatly backs off and pulls out a set of nun chucks, the PS3 pulls out a blue ray drive and then says in a religious sense “I am the future of HD gaming” “I am the future of HD gaming” “I am…” the Wii has already won. And the King of Games says you may pass.

On a side note you should really consider what each console is trying to do.

xbox 360: iterate and increase its market share in the gaming community.
Truely it has accomplished this with an early release and good games backing it.

PS3: sell its self like a whore saying its the true future of HD gaming well i have a message to Sony from my econ 101 teacher. Increase price reduces the quantity demanded by the consumers, and that if you decrease the scope of the product you further decrease the quantity sold to the consumers. My point being at 600$ its not going to sell the 70 or 80 million copies that it sold with the ps2. In reality yes i think it will sell its puny 400,000 units before Christmas but i doubt it will win over both Microsoft and Nintendo for 1st place in the market. Also with all the HD gaming crap that Sony has been feeding us like Nazi propaganda films. You must consider how many people actually have the equipment to handle HD video feed. Say an insignificant amount of the population for 1080p, and maybe 5-10% of the population for 720p (I’m really just guessing but i expect this to be close to ball park) so if you consider just that you would come out with 5-10 million units sold based on HD ability. Well great i admit the PS3 will be where HD gaming is at, but way to hit a wide demographic. Not to mention that the PS3 just like the PSP was just a tool to sell a format. UMD any one? All the reasons why the PS3 will fail

Now the Wii on the other hand is coming from a company that has nothing to do with selling formats, making music players, operating systems and what not, they have been in this race for the sake of being a gaming company. Now yes the game cube was close to being a failure. (I reserve failure for many other well known systems who truly deserve it). Now with the motion sensor abilities of the wii-mote (i wish they came up with a name that would not have so many puns) and all the online shit that Nintendo has pulled together i think that for the 279$ (I live in Canada) this console is well worth it.

Ok we all know that each system has some games that the others don’t have. Games that I want to play… why be a fan boy? why not just own all 3 systems? They really arent that expensive, and you’ve got like 5 years til the next batch comes out.
Stop being loyal to a some rich dude, who could careless who you are and just play what makes you happy.
If you flame other systems, your 12 yearsold and can’t afford anything else, other than what your parents welfare check will allow you for Jesus’s Bday.

The real battle isn’t between the wii and the ps3, but between the ps3 and the xbox360. The wii is it’s own thing.

The wii is aiming for a broader market share. Think girls. International appeal. I personally am pissed that it doesn’t at least support outputting 720p (most tvs can’t display 1080p, and to whoever said that they wanted to play in 1080i, interlaced is 1/2 the resolution - for fast paced movement, you want to be playing progressive). But alas, Nintendo screwed over my eyes on this point. However, they do have the best game developer in the world (i.e. Nintendo). The trick is getting 3rd party development, which a wide market penetration and low graphics requirements could net. The big deal for Nintendo is to ship units, and lots of them - then they will have the developer support they need. Think of the DS instead of the Gamecube.

Xbox360 - with the last patch, outputs 1080p. Will have many of the same games as the ps3 (otherwise developers are shutting themselves off from a key market), and with their on demand download service for movies and TV shows, they even beat out iTunes for HD on demand downloads. Big deal. This also shuts down the argument of the ps3 as a media center, as on demand downloads of HD content in a rental pricing structure is likely more attractive to users. And this could be a big service if they expand their content library (tough as Hollywood will want HD stuff going out of HDMI cables, not component b/c of HDCP protections).

PS3 - may be hitting the market too late in the game, and with too few units, and based on a proprietary format that may not win. The one thing it has going for it is international appeal - Japan likes Sony much more than Microsoft, and the lackluster Xbox 360 launch overseas leaves an opportunity for the ps3. I do think that Sony may have pushed itself too hard with this one. I’m going to be a wii and xbox360 person for a while yet. Unless there is an amazing PS3 exclusive title that makes me drool, I don’t think I’m considering denting my pockets for this one.

Overall though, I think you can expect to see the wii have the most units sold of all the consoles, and that distribution is going to net a number of 3rd party developers. My estimate is that the wii will be to consoles what the DS was to handhelds (i.e. less power than the psp, but more/better game development and more units sold).

    ps3 - some 700$ (with tax CAD) + games
xbox360 - some 500$ (with games, accessories, and high end bundle)
wii - 279$ (includes wii sports in box)

The price differences are large, and id have to say that id be going for the wii because of:

    -new innovative controller(s)
-somewhat good graphics (480p DVD res)
    -cheap
-wiili (linux on wii - tho not sure if its gonna work)
-nintendo’s somewhat good rep on quality hardware (not overheating or glitching like some systems *cough*360*cough*
-seems developers will give nintendo some good games :D
    -FPS advantage with wiimote

Granted, the ps3 has blu ray capabilities, but as of now, no one will be making the switch to blu ray. I certainly wont, until a blu ray burner comes out and until prices drop well below 200$

Graphics are not what defines a system (its a winning point but not THE point), its the games, fun factor, and something lighter than my custom comp :P . Sony has it right with the graphics, but its the same old same old… (controller etc) xbox360.. no comment

I’d gladly pay 50-100 bucks more for a bit more graphics capability on the wii but im happy with (internet, pictures, linux, downloading old nintendo games, etc and potentially more) on my wii

jus hopes theres more fps’ on the wii :D

the blue ray disk, is not much of an inprovement because they only changed the laser to the colour blue and the disk are a little bigger. but on they other hand hd dvd has max capacity of 15g single layer, 30 double and 90 triple. also will new dolby hd sound. hd dvd hands down is way better. this will be like when betamax and vhs had there war, we all know who won. as ps3 including blue ray this is great because buyer will not have to worry about witch will be the standard, ps3 + hd dvd player you have the best of both world’s
as far as they wii, for kids, because nintendo has always been for kids. that why playstation came into the market giving adult gamers a little more of a challenge.
now you can play nintendo classics on your psp besides
nintendo lost my intrest after nintendo 64. you grow out of it.

I am excited about the wii personaly for the ‘’wiimote'’ as they call it. it can be used for many diffrent things in a video game not like the ps3 and xbox360 crap. Ps3 is overpricing the console by 250$!! If you look at modern technology like that it would be cheaper!! Screw that blue ray crap they changed the scanning laser omg!!Thats where sony takes advantage of you!! So take my advice from a 11 year old boy whos been playing since 2.BUY ANY OTHER CONSOLES BESIDES A PS3!! (o an ps3 fan lrn h0w 2 spl retrd)

basically it depends on what your looking for and its hard to compare them

wii-wii is cheap, it doesnt have as good of graphics but its fun, its the first game system with motion sensors, and there is nothing else like it.

PS3-ps3 is basically a ps2 with a blu-ray player and good graphics, if you think about it ,PS3 has the same look, same controller (except for the six axis motion sensors),same name( its sad that sony cant come up with a new name) and same games as ps2, but with better graphics. its also way too expensive, I know im not spending $600 dollars on a game systems

xbox 360- to me, the xbox 360 was a failure, they released it to early and there were too many bugs in it, it does have alot of power but ,just like ps3, its the same thing as the original xbox, same games, same look, same controller (its a different controller but it has the same buttons).

Even though i think it could be a little bit more powerful. even if that means paying 50 dollarz more for it. Wii is great fun, ps3 is a leet powerhouse, and 360 has an extensive library already.

The nintendo wii is amazing. There are some idiots at my school who believe that the PS3 will beat them all. Now im not saying that the PS3 isn’t powerful, but it isn’t very innovative. BTW, Sony stole the motion sensor from Nintendo. Apparently, the reporters atE3 were having a go at Sony for copying them. Also at E3, the PS3 CRASHED!!!!(see youtube, there’s a vid on there.) Also, Sony don’t have any specific characters that i know of that don’t appear on other consoles. Nintendo do: Link Zelda Kirby Mario Luigi Wario: i could go on. Im not saying the other consoles suck ass, im just saying that i have no idea what a blue ray disk is, and i don’t care.

Been a gamer since I recieved my super nintendo in primary school, bought the 64, the ps2, played xbox and frequent the online COD, WOW servers. Being a poor uni student now, I place alot of emphasis on the lastability of a system and its games. Will I still be getting my moneys worth in a year with the Wii? I dunno. That is the only question which stops me hopping on the bandwagon and running down to the local shop to pick up one of these babies. This technology is being marketed as new and innovative but will I still be thinking “Wow, movement and gyro control is the way I would like to be playing games” in a year. The ps3 on the other hand is a worry in the sense that the games that I’ll be playing will be the same old ps2 and even ps1 games with better graphics, which dissapoint me with the newer ps2 games available now. I’m in a dilemma what to choose what to choose.

Im in for the games. yeah the wii has mario, zelda and metroid and all the old school downloads but lets think down the line who will come out on top you say ps3 (heavenly sword, final fantasy 13 and versus 13, Metal gear solid 4, devil may cry 4, any first person (rainbow 6, GRAW 2 shooters sure you can aim with the wii remote but your out numbered by the regular controllers, ur gonna we ps3 over with fun but what happens when you face a ps3 game with fun and HD, Grand Tourismo, Need for speed, Grand Theft Auto 4, Tekken 6, our tony hawks beat yours any day graphics, ace combat, god of war 3, armored core 4, o whats coming for the wii ahhh another mario sports game uber Cooool!!) only have 20 games and 2 downloads what about ps2 games and ps1 games. i still have all my favorites packed away but for the ones who threw them away you can get up off your lazy a** and stop by a game store and buy there vintage games!! Over Price?! tell me how much gigs does the wii hold and how much power does it have and sometimes i wan to just sit down and play rather than hacking the air around me o yeah you can use the controllers to move around but very soon thats gonna get old i dont even consider the wii to be on the same level as the ps3 an xbox. O whats this no dvd player right out the box. OMG i can make my own avi and get the weather channel. how many people really care if they dont take a minute to see it on tv why would they bother doing it on the wii. i can put my face in games with my avi on the wii. im not trying to bash the wii but when people gang up on the ps3 it gets me angry. i love all games but WTF the wii escaped defeat by a controller. the graphics im told is maxed out a little over the xbox im. how many games will be more earth shatter than Zelda, Mario, Super Smash and Metroid. im not saying ur not getting bang for your buck but down the line the Nintendos Wii looks like it going to shrink a little bit more as the colld years go by. PS3 has its has its weak points but soon to be erased via online updates LOL.

Is buying a blue ray disk player now really worth 600 dollars? When the first DVD players came out, they were sold for about 1000 dollars, now you can get one for as little as 30 dollars. PS3’s blue ray will come in useful, 5-10 years from now and at that time, Blue-Ray players will be 30 dollars. Blue-Ray is PS3’s main feature and it is useless right now.

We buy game consoles to play games to have fun, not to watch DVD’s and surf the internet - that’s what computers are made for.

PS3 is the “Jack Of All Traits - But the Master Of None.”

statistically it is predicted that over 60% of the u.s. will own an HDTV by 2010.

also, the 360 costs just as much as the high-end PS3 if you want a ($200) HD-DVD player add-on. and you have to hand over another $50 bucks for Wi-Fi. And with such there is a grand total of $650, $50 more than the high-end PS3 and $150 more than the lower-end.

Im not a fanboy, i just spent a whole 5 days playing Gears of War with my cousin and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I am just a bit annoyed at these people who call the PS3 overpriced.

I believe that the 360 is nowhere near its potential, and the PS3 is not even near the bottom of its potential. The Wii is definetly aimed at non-gamers or as just a small present.

The PS3 will have enormous international succes in a few years, especially in Japan and Europe. Sony is huge in Japan and a family without a PS2 in Europe? yea right. The Xbox is virtually unknown in Europe and nintendo is in the same category.

The 360 will sell in the U.S. in Canada most of all. The Wii had an enormous start but will slow down drastically in a few months.

I am an apparently hated age in the gaming world, 12. As you have seen, some of us don’t always type HACKorZ!!iM 1337!!111lololol111n00btard PwNd u. im not some spoilt brat, i own a PS3, but i had to earn it too. My family mostly uses it to watch movies and play games, but we’re thinking abot expanding its use.
